One of the treatments our dentists may recommend for gum disease is a gingivectomy. Gingivectomy, also known as pocket reduction or flap surgery, is a periodontal treatment used to remove bacteria and calculus from the roots of your teeth. This is a minor surgical procedure, and it can usually be completed in just one visit to Mirci Dental.
Gingivectomy is typically recommended in order to:
- Reduce the spread of harmful bacteria
- Halt bone loss due to gum disease
- Help facilitate more effective at-home care
When you receive a gingivectomy, our dentists will first administer a local anesthetic and another sedation option of your choice to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Your gums will be gently pulled back from your teeth, and the bacteria and calculus on the teeth and tooth roots will be removed. At the end of the procedure, our dentists will provide an antimicrobial agent to eliminate any remaining bacteria and encourage your gums to heal. Finally, your gums will be sutured back into place to complete your treatment and prevent further shifting of the gum tissue.
You may notice some sensitivity in your gums and teeth after your gingivectomy. However, this should soon dissipate, and you should see an improvement in the health of your teeth and gums within a few weeks after your procedure.
