A frenulum is a small fold of tissue connecting one part of your mouth to another. In some cases, this tissue is too large or too tight and can prevent normal eating and proper speech production. By removing or modifying the frenulum, our dentists can improve the function and health of your mouth and smile. This procedure is called a frenectomy.
There are two common types of frenectomy – lingual frenectomy and labial frenectomy. Lingual frenectomy, also known as a tongue-tie, is caused when the tissue that connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too thick. This inhibits your ability to chew, speak and eat normally. Labial frenectomies occur in the tissue connecting the top lip to the gums, which can cause gum recession and gaps between the upper front teeth, as well as causing problems for those who wear dentures.
Frenectomies are quick and simple procedures. Dr. Mirci and Dr. Reynolds can usually perform a frenectomy in a single appointment, and they ensure that you or your child are comfortable throughout the entire process. After your frenectomy, we will provide detailed post-op instructions to help facilitate proper healing.
